Program Recap
Maximize the Lifetime and Power of your News
Releases
"Public relations is harder to do than ever before, and also easier to do than
ever before," said Lee D. Marshall, Chairman of PRSA Mid-Atlantic District.
Marshall shared this paradox as part of his presentation on effective news
releases at the January meeting of the Public Relations Council.
According to Marshall, there are more venues than
ever before in which to place your information but the competition for space
remains fierce. He said to start by making sure the content of the release is in
understandable English and not jargon or technical terminology.
He then suggests targeting the top five media you'd
like to cover your story and get to know the reporters and their particular
beats and interests.
"Establish a relationship with them," he said, "by
interviewing them about their needs." While practitioners may e-mail reporters
with every release, he suggests that they call only when they have a story that
meets those needs.
Lee D. Marshall can be reached at Business Wire at (610) 617-9560. # # #
